Hofstra Hosts Clinic With Let All The Children Play Foundation

April 23, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Department of Athletics hosted a sports clinic for the Let All The Children Play Foundation and some very special participants in the David S. Mack Fitness Center on Sunday, April 19. More than 50 guests spent the morning with Hofstra student-athletes from the Hofstra Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Volleyball teams. Participants were taken through drills and games that stressed the importance of exercise, teamwork and, most importantly, creating an atmosphere of inclusion through sport.

The event started off with a welcome from Hofstra University Assistant Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Services and Life Skills Development James Lally and LATCPF Director of Operations Shea Shapiro. Participants were then broken up into three groups and spent the next hour and a half playing soccer, basketball and volleyball; meeting new friends along the way. After the event concluded, guests were invited to enjoy the Pride Baseball and Softball games that were taking place on campus.

The Hofstra University Department of Athletics would like to thank the Let All The Children Play Foundation for all of their hard work organizing what has become an annual sports clinic. Hosting this event has been a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to give back and share their love of sports. We look forward to our continued partnership in the future.

April 22, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

Rocky Point High School’s baseball team continued their tradition of giving back to the community by once again volunteering at Maureen’s Haven Homeless Shelter in Cutchogue this spring.

The team collected more than 75 fast food gift cards to give out to homeless individuals. Coach Aschettino, Coach Goldstein and Coach Strovink joined their team during this initiative, and Maureen’s Haven was thrilled with the teams help and donations.

VARSITY SOFTBALL BENEFIT RAISES THOUSANDS FOR THE MULTIPLE MYELOMA RESEARCH FOUNDATION

April 22, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

On Saturday, April 18, the Kellenberg Varsity Softball team held its annual benefit game at Bob Klein Field at Skelos Athletics Complex in Rockville Centre. This year the game was held to benefit the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Multiple Myeloma is a cancer that affects the blood and skeletal systems, for which there is not yet a cure. Three years ago, coach Steven Piorkowski of Bayside High School Softball and father of Kellenberg senior, Katherine, was diagnosed with the disease. Sadly, earlier this year Coach Piorkowski passed away. The Kellenberg Varsity Softball team was able to raise $7,002.00 from this year’s benefit game, which was given directly to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. The team would like to thank all those present for the benefit game and all those who contributed to the cause.

East Islip High School’s varsity softball team volunteered at Farmingdale College’s annual “Have a Heart for the Homeless” event on March 31. Aided by coach Jason McGowan, these altruistic players brought in clothes, canned goods and other items; handed out candles and coats; did face painting; and helped families in need throughout the night.
